Soundmaps in pre-school education: sound aesthetics and creative learning
Summary:
In the context of the literature about Acoustic Ecology and sound aesthetics, in this study we will try to make a connection between sound and maps, that involves an educational program targeting preschool children. The expected outcome of the educational program is the construction of soundmaps from the children. In order to achieve that, we have designed this program, where the key-element is sound and the starting point is the interest of children about animals. The primary goal of this program is the use of soundmaps as a means to achieve the development of preschool children’s auditory ability and perception of sound aesthetics concerning sound characteristics, through activities that involve creative learning. The main axis of this study is the development of sonic literacy in children, that can be achieved through Acoustic Ecology and the perception of aesthetics of sounds originated from animals, nature and humans and the way these are connected with space. A variety of planned activities took place, some of which where experimental. The activities as a whole involved the children’s active participation. The children’s former knowledge of the subjects was taken into account while the planning of the activities took place, in order to build new knowledge that will be connected to the existing. After analyzing the data that was extracted from the “teacher’s diary”, the children’s drawings and the sound recordings that took place, the data was grouped and classified. The results that emerged were expected to an extent. The main goals of the Curriculum of Preschool Education where met and the children worked as a team or in small groups, when it was needed. The whole process had positive outcomes concerning children’s listening of sounds and understanding of 2D and 3D space, as well as their concern about the protection of the environment.
