Personality and School Adjustment in Adolescence: A longitudinal Study
Summary:
The purpose of the present study was to examine the relation between personality and school adjustment in early adolescence. Specifically, we examined the relation of the Big Five personality factors (Costa & McCrae, 1992) with conduct problems and school performance of the adolescents, using longitudinal data from Αthena Studies of Resilient Adaptation study (AStRA, Motti-Stefanidi, Masten, Asendorpf & Obradovic, 2013- 2015). The research questions related to if gender, personality factors and the interaction between gender and personality factors could predict behavioral problems and school performance of the students, cross-sectionally and longitudinally. The sample consisted of 231 adolescents, who completed the self-report questionnaire of Asendorpf & Van Aken (2003) about the Big Five personality factors and the self-report questionnaire of Goodman, Meltzer & Bailey (1998) about the strengths and difficulties of the behavior. At the same time, the Grade Point Average (GPA) of the students was gathered, in order to assess their school performance. According to the results, gender does not predict behavioral problems neither cross-sectionally nor longitudinally. However, gender predicts school performance cross-sectionally but not longitudinally. Personality factors do not predict behavioral problems and school performance neither cross-sectionally nor longitudinally. Finally, the interactions between gender and personality factors cannot predict school performance neither cross-sectionally nor longitudinally. With regard to behavioral problems, only the interaction between gender and openness to experience can predict them, cross-sectionally.
