Otoliths and sea-level fluctuations in the lower Pleistocene of Rhodes
Summary:
The research on changes that took place in Mediterranean during the Pleistocene is
crucial to understand the evolution of this basin the last 2.5 Myr. A significant amount of data
had emerged the last decades from the study of fossilized ichthyofaunas of this region. The
identification of the species that included in those assemblages helped the study of
Mediterranean ecosystems. Moreover, the study of paleobiogeographic distribution of those
species expand our knowledge on environmental changes that occurred in this basin. The aim
of this study is to identify the lower Pleistocene (Gelasian) fish assemblages of the eastern
Mediterranean and to reconstruct the paleobathymetric and paleoecologic conditions. Seven
hundred and three fish otoliths were extracted and studied from sediments of the Kritika
Formation cropping out in the northeastern part of Rhodes. Thirty eight species were
recognized and 13 of them described for the first time in Gelasian of the eastern Mediterranean.
Paleoenvironmental analysis indicate a shallow coastal environment characterized by sandy
and muddy substrates and subtropical climate. The new data come to complement the existing
knowledge on the study area, while providing new information on the composition of
ichthyofaunas of the eastern Mediterranean during the Gelasian.
