The role of familial, social and personal factors in psychosocial adaptation and school achievent: A comparison with Native Greek students
Summary:
The growing presence of immigrant students in Greek schools makes all parties
involved, to deal with the «double challenge» of development and intercultural contact.
Aims of the present study were to examine the role of families’ and friends’ functioning
in psychosocial adaptation and school achievement of immigrant adolescents, and also
the mediation role of coping strategies and self-efficacy in the above relationships. A
quantitative research study was conducted throughout the administration of self-report
questionnaires. The sample consisted of 103 immigrants from various national
backgrounds and 220 non-immigrant peers born and raised in Greece. The students
attended gymnasium (2nd and 3rd grade) from ten schools in the region of Attica. The
results showed that immigrants had worse grades than non-immigrants, but did not differ
from them in the psychosocial adaptation. Healthy family functioning predicts better
mood and school environment, and emotional expressiveness predicts better selfperception. Also, the relationship between family’s collision and mood, psychological
well-being is mediated by negative coping strategies in immigrants, and the relationship
between friend’s help and school achievement is mediated by school and social selfefficacy in non-immigrants. Our findings underscore the importance of developmentally
and culturally sensitive, multilevel programs in school with the involvement of students,
parents and teachers.
