"Evaluation of museum learning: The use of Generic Learning Outcomes' tool at the Museum of Education of the University of Athens"
Summary:
This thesis explores the learning outcomes that are produced from the educational programmes at museums. More specifically, it aims to describe learning that takes place in the Museum of Education at the University of Athens and to evaluate the educational objectives of its programmes. Among others the subject areas that are analysed are Museum Education, Learning Theories, Museum Evaluation, History of Education, contributing to the conceptual understanding of the PhD project. The method is applied by the tool of evaluation, ‘Generic Learning Outcomes’ (GLOs) that captures the wide range of visitors’ learning experience in cultural spaces. This specific tool investigates five learning elements in which the museum visitor is involved: knowledge, skills, attitudes, creativity and progression. The present doctoral research was carried out during the academic year 2016-2017 including 586 Primary School students. The students that participated in the research were asked to fill in a questionnaire designed on their age and cognition range and the five learning elements of the GLOs. From the emerging findings of the research, it is concluded that the objectives of the programmes of the Museum of Education were achieved and that there were positive learning outcomes for the students after their visit. The percentages of the correspondence of the young visitors to the GLOs elements demonstrate significant statistical fluctuations. The concrete results provide information on the strengths and weaknesses of the educational programmes of the Museum, but also suggest improvements on its complete agenda. Finally, the research proves that the GLOs constitute a valuable tool that can be deployed effectively for the evaluation of the museum learning in the current Greek landscape.
