Incidence of legionnaires' disease in Greece, Europe and Internationally during the decade 2008 - 2018
Summary:
Legionnaires’ disease is a rare form of pneumonia and part of differential diagnosis of atypical pneumonia. The main cause of the disease is a gram (-) bacillus, who thrives in natural or artificial water environment, Legionella pneumophila. Legionnaires’ disease is transmitted through inhalation of micro droplets infected with Legionella and its laboratory diagnosis is based on cultures and urinary antigen detection of Legionella. Proper treatment of the disease includes hospital admission and intravenous
antibiotics administration otherwise the prognosis is poor. The most significant forms of Legionnaires’ disease are the community-acquired legionnaires’ disease and the nosocomial.
Legionnaires’ disease is endemic in almost every geographical region of Greece and its incidence similar to those presented internationally from 2008 to 2016 while the surveillance of disease’s cases is conducted by government agencies in coordination with the European Surveillance Net of Legionnaires’ disease. The majority of reported cases in Europe (69% out of total) occurred in England, Italy, France and Spain according to data from European Surveillance Net of Legionnaires’ disease. Internationally, the most reliable information about documentation of the cases, epidemiology and incidence of the disease are obtained from United States Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
