Gestures and argumentation of students with impaired vision during geometry activities
Summary:
The purpose of the research, which took place in the context of my thesis, was to study the gestures as well as the argumentation that students with impaired vision use during geometry activities. An intervention took place with three students at a special centre in Athens with the help of their math teacher. The results of the research made clear that on the one hand, students with impaired vision use all kinds of gestures and that on the other hand, the use of these gestures can help them immensely during the whole process of solving geometrical problems. Actually, in some cases, it was shown that the students combined different gestures to deal with the activities. As far as their argumentation is concerned, it was divided into two phases, the initial and the final one. While on the initial phase students relied mainly on their intuition and they didn’t use a logical, mathematical argumentation, in the final phase they managed to justify their reasoning with correct argumentation through appropriate intervention. However, in both cases of the argumentation students used gestures either to collect more information or to support their reasoning.
