School-based vocational guidance, professional perspectives and expectations of teenagers with low vision and visual impairment
Summary:
The access to the educational and labour goods is considered a crucial issue for the full inclusion of people with disabilities into the society. The disability movement has highlighted the social oppression experienced by individuals with disabilities due to their exclusion from all areas of social activity. The removal of the exclusion of the disabled, as well as all the oppressed groups, consists a matter of justice and human rights.

Historically, the hegemony of the medical /clinical model of disability, which attributes the cause of disability to harm and not to the organization of society, has strengthened the economic and social dependence of the disabled and has contributed to the perpetuating of the prejudices about their inability.

Persons with visual impairment have always been considered counterproductive and have been excluded from work. However, over the past few decades, the voices that support their right to equal access to education and to the labour market have been arisen.

Youth expectations for their educational and professional future are linked to the motivations they have developed, to the self-esteem, to the expectations of the family and others significant persons, to the situation in education and the labour market.

It is argued that young people with disabilities have fewer expectations and limited incentives to continue studying and entering the labour market.

The present research explores the professional expectations of teenagers with low vision and visual impairment. It aims at highlighting the factors that contribute to the shaping of their professional expectations in relation to the educational goals and their educational prospects.

The theoretical approach of the social model of disability, and its effects from the materialist approach consisted the theoretical background of this project. The semi-structured interview was chosen as a methodological tool, while the study of the data was based on content analysis.

The sample was ten female pupils and one male pupil with low vision or visual impairment who attended secondary schools in the prefecture of Attica.
Through their speech, it was explored the role of the disability experience, the role of family, friends and school in their educational and professional choices and aspirations.

The data obtained are interesting and indirectly or directly highlight the disability experience as a key element in shaping educational and professional expectations and choices. The influence of family and friends, according to the students' words, has been very important in the configuration of their expectations and in the making of educational and professional decisions. While school seemed to influence less the students' choices. Furthermore, the absence of school-based vocational guidance was considered negative by all participants. Finally, the pupils' expectation of joining the labor market was associated with their willingness to gain autonomy, economic independence, social acceptance and mental balance, thus overcoming the negative consequences of the disability experience
