Summary:
The Hellenic Air Force (HAF), according to its Basic Doctrine, is the primary factor in engaging and demonstrating the strength of the country due to its speed of reaction and due to the exceptional peculiarity of the Greek territory. Apart from ensuring "deterrence" and security, during the peace period, HAF participates in Political Design for Emergency Needs and carries out important work for the benefit of society as a whole.
With personnel and aircrafts in full readiness, it performs daily and often under adverse weather conditions air transfers of civilian that are at risk in any remote and inaccessible part of the Greek territory. In addition, with the appropriate infrastructure and means, it performs Search and Rescue (SAR) through the Single Research and Rescue Coordination Center (EKSED). Thirdly, HAF's contribution to fire detection and response is particularly important, thus actively contributing to the protection of forests and property of Greek citizens.
In the present paper the elements that determine both the quantitative and the qualitative contribution of HAF in dealing with natural disasters and crises during the century are presented, dealing mainly with the view of the three (3) parallel missions mentioned above and more.
The method used is the bibliographic research of the Internet using keywords.
More specifically, the first part provides some general but crucial definitions and concepts concerning the subject of the paper, as it is necessary to familiarize the reader with the main characteristics of the Air Force and with the basic principles of the disaster/crises management.
In the main body of the paper, the abilities of HAF on the part of the social offer are presented, followed by the evidence confirming its deep involvement in the disaster response.
The aim of the project is to promote this specific Armed Forces (AF) sector, as well as to highlight the importance of the help being offered in peacetime, which is one of the main reasons why HAF enjoys high acceptance rates from Greek society.
