Teaching history through opera with the Use of Information and Communication Technologies
Summary:
The present thesis focuses on teaching the elements of opera and on investigating how the opera can be used to teach the subject of History to young pupils of the 6th grade of Elementary School. Motivation for this research has been (a) the great interest shown nowadays in topics related to the implementation of new technologies in education, mainly in crosscurricular areas, considering both educational and pedagogical aspects, and (b) the fact that proposals or interventions and studies on this subject do not really exist. The main goal of this thesis is to investigate the role of opera in teaching History; to this end, an educational intervention is planned, implemented and evaluated. The educational scenario introduces pupils to the elements that constitute the opera and serves as a source for collecting data in order to answer a number of educational research questions. The basic objectives of this thesis and at the same time the research questions it attempts to answer are the following: 1. To detect a potential change of pupils’ attitude concerning what is opera and who could possibly be attracted to it, after the intervention. This question is of great importance because Greek pupils at that age are not familiar with this kind of art. 2. To facilitate pupils to comprehend the taught material in History (learning outcomes) through their involvement with opera via technology and its various applications (digital games, digital applications, animation etc.) 3. To cultivate pupils’ interest and to motivate them on the topic of opera (music, theatre, art) - (post-intervention activity and engagement) 4. To detect potential changes in the attitudes of the pupils’ parents towards opera and towards the use of new technologies in teaching and learning procedure. A great part of the whole endeavor is dedicated to the assessment of the effectiveness of the intervention and to the investigation of how it can be used in connection with other school subjects. This is attempted mainly through the use of new technologies and their applications, in teaching the subject of History at Primary Education, and the formulation of relevant teaching ideas and practices. The structure of this thesis in chapters is as follows:
7

In the first chapter, the basic ideas of the intervention are presented. Starting with the teaching method of history, its main principles and the necessity and the role of the teacher, it goes on presenting several aspects of opera, its position in modern society and its role in the teaching process. The following chapter refers to the role of new technologies in the educational process, specifically in teaching history. The rest of the chapters in the first part present the theories on collaborative and inquirybased learning and on cross-curricular methods. In the second part of the thesis, the aim, objectives and methodology of the research are outlined and the planning and implementation of the educational intervention are analytically described. In the seventh chapter are described the activities that a teacher can plan and carry out in the classroom in order to adjust a form of art, creativity and expression like opera, to the needs and the interests of the pupils. Intervention data are analysed to obtain results and produce answers to the research questions. In conclusion, suggestions are made for further research on the topics and issues presented in this thesis.
