Evaluation of compounding practices in Greek community pharmacies
Summary:
The preparation of compounded medication in community pharmacies is considered a high risk practice, which is however crucial to some groups of patients with special pharmaceutical needs. This is the reason that various health systems and regulatory organizations around the world , exempt the preparation of compounded medication from the usual licensing procedures that are followed for the rest of pharmaceutical products and are trying to regulate compounding pharmacies market in order to safeguard public health
The pharmaceutical legislation in Greece recognizes the ability and the responsibility of community pharmacist to compound some medicines when needed .
The objective of this study was to document and evaluate crucial parameters of compounding practices followed by Greek pharmacists regarding the general demand of compounded medications
For the purposes of the study a questionnaire was developed and shared in social media groups of professional pharmacists
234 people responded to the questionnaire from a total of 3.749 people that received an invitation to answer the questions (6.24% response rate ).
The study has revealed a low demand of compounded medication , since only 14.2% of participants were asked to prepare at least one compounded formula every day in their pharmacy . Additionally the study has revealed several issues regarding pharmacist level of understanding of good preparation practices. In particular 39.7% of participants failed to name Active Pharmaceutical ingredients according to their definition by the literature .In addition 78.6% of participating pharmacist failed to identify all data that should be listed in the label of a compounded medication according to the international standard practices .
