Characteristics of high potential and high ability students in the school community: Case study
Summary:
The purpose of the first part of the present study is to investigate the characteristics that teachers and parents attribute to high potential and high ability students that have been nominated by their teachers. In this research, 32 primary and secondary teachers and 24 parents participated. A questionnaire consisted of 21 items that refer to general characteristics has been used to explore the views of teachers and parents. The results showed that teachers and parents attributed the same characteristics to high potential students, such as advanced thinking, unconventional ideas, knowledge and good relationships with the members of school community. The second part of the present study is a case study of two secondary students that have been selected due to the rich information they have. The purpose is the holistic approach of the students combining their own views and the views from their school and family environment. The two students completed the General Self Efficacy Scale (GSE) and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), while teachers and parents completed part of the Scales for Rating Characteristics of Superior Students (SRBCSS). Parents also completed some questions about their child and the SDQ for parents. As the results showed, most of the participants views are the same. The results are discussed towards the perspective of understanding their characteristics and supporting them.
