Digital storytelling as an investigation means of paternal function
Summary:
Taking for granted that personal narratives are natural insightful ways of conveying messages, in this study the tool of digital narrative is evaluated so as to illustrate the subjective experience of fatherhood. It mainly aims at answering the following research questions: How does the individual express the function of father through digital narratives? In which way does the process of developing a digital narrative enhance the subject’s contemplation of paternal function?
Given the aim of the research project mentioned above, the participants were asked to build a story based on the following topic: “Fatherhood -create a story describing your experience as a father”.
Eight (8) men are the sample used for this particular research project. The making of these digital narratives was done in person and it concerns narratives created during: A. Four team sessions of the “Story Circle” at the premises of Τ.Ε.Α.Π.Η. of Ε.Κ.Π.Α. (University of Athens), for four of the eight participants in the research project. B. Private sessions of the researcher with the rest participants, off the “Story Circle”.
The results of the qualitative research came from the evaluation of the digital narratives, the research diary, the focus group (only for those participating in the Story Circle), and the questionnaire completed by all the participants. The use of the technique of digital narrative as a means of self-narrative illustrates the benefits of the discussion of lived experiences, the weakening of the impact on individuals’ lives, and the narration of an individual’s personal story anew.
