Media Archaeology of Sonic Technologies: Artistic Approaches and Aesthetics
Summary:
Media archaeology is a newly established, multidisciplinary field combining, philosophy, art, technology and media studies. We will be overviewing the field of media archaeology and shifting our focus more specifically on the archaeology of sound media and the interaction of the field with the practices of sonic art, and media-specific sound art. We'll attempt to analyze the impact of the recording technology both in music and in the acoustical perception of the people and how the recording technology has progressed. Today, we live in a post-digital world, the sensation of the digital has been lost and all analog and digital apparatus are available for artistic use. A new artistic tendency is developed by the name of post-digital aesthetics. In this dissertation we'll be unpacking this new aesthetic, which artists adhere to it and how their work is informed by both the post-digital aesthetics as well as media archaeology. Furthermore, we'll be examining some compositional ideas that are unique to the media-specific art. On the second part of the dissertation we'll be presenting the media-specific artistic practice of the writer. More specifically, we'll be presenting a musical analysis of a piece interconnected with the ideas of media archaeology and post-digital art and also a workshop about experimental turntablism and how the idea of physical spaces and meetings can further support the D.I.Y communities of obsolete media.
