Unaccompanied minor refugees and emotional disturbances
Summary:
Many unaccompanied children arrive in Greece having lost their parents or separated from them. These children are a particularly vulnerable population group with a host of physical and mental traumas.
This study deals with emotional difficulties in unaccompanied minor refugees and post - traumatic stress disorder in the light of family factors, immigration, current life conditions, religion and positive expectations for their future.
The sample of the survey consisted of 41 boys who temporarily housed in structures of unaccompanied minors. Data collection was conducted using three questionnaires. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and the Children's Revised Impact of Event Scale were given to unaccompanied minors, translated in native language. In addition, for the needs of study an improvised questionnaire, clinical description and social data was produced, supplemented by children's caregivers. The statistical analysis was made using the SPSS program.
The findings of the survey showed that 43.9% of children have very serious emotional problems, 14.6% have serious emotional problems, and 16.5% have mild emotional problems. The loss of important persons during the journey seemed to be associated with the emergence of emotional problems while the cultural backgrounds of the children seem to be an inhibiting factor in adapting to the host country. It has also been found that there is a high correlation of hyperactivity with emotional problems and positive thoughts that children have about the future are related to their relationships with peers.
