Summary:
Crosslinguistic influence may refer to the transfers made by bilinguals between the languages they speak in both directions, with the L1 and L2 influencing each other in many different levels. The purpose of this study is to identify the degree of crosslinguistic influence in the comprehension of metaphorical expression in both English and Greek, in a questionnaire where under-graduate students of the department of English Language and Literature were required to evaluate how common, meaningful and metaphorical they are, using a Likert-Scale evaluation. There are two main theoretical approaches to metaphor processing, one that advocates that the understanding of metaphors in based on conceptual metaphors and another that puts emphasis on the broadening and narrowing of meaning of lexical items through the manifestation of ad hoc concepts. Both theories were exploited in designing the questionnaire so as to identify any implications towards the effectiveness of one of the two theories. The results of this study indicated a difference between the first-year students and the fourth-year students which suggests a change in the conceptual system of bilinguals with regard to their amount of exposure to the L2. Moreover, the results suggest a significant differentiation of conventional metaphorical expressions between those that share a common concept and linguistic expressions and those that share a common concept but utilize different linguistic metaphorical expressions in the two languages.
