Effectiveness of education in road safety and accident prevention

This thesis is a bibliographic review of road safety education programs. It exams current practices in the evaluation survey and the effectiveness of this programs. Road safety is directly related to human health around the world. A particular category of people is children and adolescents, whose physical and psychological integrity are directly threatened by unpleasant events occurring on the road, with victims both of themselves and their relatives. Road accidents are among the first four causes of death for children aged 10 years and above, and it is therefore considered critical and enforced to cultivate traffic behavior and education.
The survey found that although there are a large number of road safety education programs, few are accompanied by official assessments. Most research studies focus on knowledge, on safe behavior and on personal attitudes, leaving behind the examination of accidents as such, most of them involving children and teenagers as pedestrians. The findings of theses researches and evaluations cannot be generalized.Road safety education must start from pre-school age, continue through Primary and Secondary / High School, with individualized. Road safety education must be practice-oriented, enriched with good behavioral displays, new technological tools and alternative teaching methods.
