The effect of group cohesion on competitive anxiety and performance in female waterpolo players.
Summary:
The main aim of this study was to determine the relationship between cohesion, competitive state anxiety and performance in waterpolo women players. Social cohesion and task cohesion were the independent variables while the dependent were the intensity and the direction of anxiety and performance. The sample consisted of 78 female waterpolo players. The athletes age ranged from 12 to 34 years (M=21.69). The length of membership ranged from 1 to 18 years (M= 5.06). The Group Environment Questionnaire (Group Environment Questionnaire; GΕQ; Carron, Widmeyer, & Brawley, 1985; Aggelonidis I., 1995) was used to measure athletes’ perceptions of task and social cohesiveness. Competitive state anxiety was assessed with the (Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-II; CSAI-II; Martens et al., 1990; Kakkos, V., &Zervas, Y., 1996). To determine the direction of competitive state anxiety a directional scale for each question was also included consistent with the method employed by Jones and Swain (1992). Performance was assessed with the result of the measured game. After securing the coach’s approval the researcher attended a practice session in midweek, at that time the athletes completed the consent form and the GEQ. The modified version of the CSAI-2 was completed at the weekend’s game before the athletes got into the water for warm-up.The results showed a positive correlation between social cohesion and the direction of anxiety and the intensity of self efficacy. Task cohesion and direction of self efficacy were positively related. Task cohesion was negatively related with the loss presentences of the team. Significant differences in direction and intensity of anxiety between high and low social and task cohesion teamswere revealed. The social and task cohesion both predict performance and self efficacy’s direction. Conclusively, high cohesive teams (task cohesion) appear high levels of performance. Female athletes, members of high cohesive teams (social cohesion) determine their anxiety as facilitative for their performance.
