Hopelessness, hostility and impulsivity in patients with recent suicide attempt
Summary:
According to the World Health Organization, suicide is the second cause of death between the ages of 15-29 and the 7th cause of death globally. It is therefore a major health issue that has been of interest to the scientific community. Biological, psychological and social factors are involved in self-destructing behavior and many theories have been proposed for suicidal behavior over the years. One of the most prevalent theories is the stress-diathesis model (Mann, 2003), according to which, predispositions (impulsivity, hopelessness, hostility) combined with stressors (psychiatric disorder, stressful life events) interact and may lead to self-destructive behavior. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between hopelessness, impulsivity and hostility in suicidal behavior in patients with recent suicide attempts.
A total of 56 people with recent suicide attempt (21 males and 35 females) were studied. The mean age of the sample was 38.16 (± 14.45) years. The sample was collected at Attiko University General Hospital. Those who accepted to participate in the research were questioned not later than three days after the suicide attempt. Specifically, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11), Becks Depression Inventory (BDI), Hostility and Direction of Hostility Questionnaire (HDHQ), and Becks Hopelessness Scale (BHS) were completed.
The statistical analysis that was carried out showed the role of hopelessness, hostility and impulsivity in patients with recent suicide attempts. Differences between the genders were found in demographic and psychometric characteristics. More women were married than men. In psychometric characteristics, men showed higher levels of impulsivity in the self-control dimension than women. In addition, it was found that patients with a recent suicide attempt who had high impulsivity had higher levels of hostility than those with low impulsivity. It is also argued that suicide attempts in a person's history are a major risk factor for repeating the attempt. Patients with multiple attempts had elevated scores in hostility in the subscale criticism of others, in impulsivity in the subscale Attention, in depression and in hopelessness, compared to patients with one attempt. In addition, the findings of the present study support the fact that hopelessness is a risk factor independent of depression, age and gender in patients with multiple attempts compared to patients with one attempt. Although hopelessness is considered a risk factor for suicide regardless of depression, it seems important to take into account the combination of these two clinical features.
