Self-efficacy of children with high abilities, in compare with the typical children : Perceptions from the parents of the gifted
Summary:
The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of self-efficacy of children with high abilities, compare them with the characteristics of typical children and explore the degree of agreement between the reports of high ability students about their self-efficacy and the perceptions of their parents. The sample of the survey consisted of 384 pupils attending the fourth, fifth and sixth public primary school grades from Athens and provinces and 20 parents. A self - efficacy scale that constisted of 16 questions was administered to students along with a questionnaire created for this study regarding the general and specificcharacteristics of children with high abilities scale was completed by their parents. The latter was based on previous research studies in Greek sample and in the Scales for Rating the Behavioral Characteristics of Superior Students (SRBCSS). Statistically significant differences were found between high - ability students and “average” students in terms of their self-efficacy characteristics. Many reports of both parents and nominated students were similar in terms of the group of nominated students’ characteristics such as resourcefulness, trust in their abilities, good interpersonal relationships and planning abilities. The results are discussed towards the perspective of understanding better the characteristics of children with high potential in terms of creating educational programs that they meet their needs.
