Physiological response of children and adults during the performance of Greek traditional dances
Summary:
Purpose: The purpose of this research is to record certain physiological parameters and somatometric characteristics (strength aerobic capacity, jump ability) in school children aged 10 to 14 who are involved in Cretan traditional dance.
Introduction: Through exercise we are not only pursuing high performance but also promoting health. Greek traditional dance, in addition to entertainment and culture, can be used as an exercise because it has a pace, a specific intensity, a prolonged duration, elements that make up an effective training program.
Methodology: 25 healthy dancers of Cretan dances and 20 healthy athletes of the same age group participated in this study. Both teams had at least two years of coaching experience. After measuring some somatometric characteristics (body stature, body mass, body fat percentage), followed by handwriting, assessment of countermovement jump and prediction of maximum oxygen uptake.
Results: The results showed that dancers showed much higher values of gestation (finger flexing force) compared to track and field athletes. Possibly, the prolonged hand position in horizontal abduction of the dancers, acts as an isometric exercise. In terms of altitude, track and field athletes showed better performance as they scored higher in both trials. Finally athletes did not show statistically significant differences in maximum oxygen intake, ie aerobic capacity, which emphasized the improvement of cardio-respiratory health through Cretan traditional dance.
Conclusions: The findings of the study suggest that Cretan traditional dance can be considered as exercise as it has similar effects to classical forms of exercise. It improves the aerobic capacity that is an important health factor. It is an intense physical activity and is related to physical strength.
