The unpublished Archive of Panagiotis Efstratiadis, the first Ephorate of Antiquites during the two decades of 1864-1884.
Summary:
The topic of my thesis during my Master’s degree in the Faculty of History and Archaeology of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, and specifically the department of Classical Archaeology, is comprised of the unpublished Archive of Panagiotis Efstratiadis, the first Ephorate of Antiquites during the two decades of 1864-1884. The record is kept at the National Archive of Monuments. However, it is not the only one, since Efstratiadis’ Archive-Diary which is of significant size is also kept at the Archaeological Society of Athens as well as a smaller part of it at the General State Archives of Greece. Concerning the Archives in the National Archive of Antiquities, the volume of about 2,000 documents inevitably limits the presentation to specific focus on some of the numerous significant themes that it entails and only within a part of it a detailed presentation is given, since a detailed analysis of all the documents would by large exceed the required length of this dissertation. It is of utmost importance that the Efstratiadis Archive is promptly considered, both as a whole and in parts, as a precious tool for the history of archaeology of 19th century Greece, the so called heroic era of archaeology, as well as for the history and topography mostly of 19th-century Athens. The reconstitution of 19th century Greece through the abundant information of the Archive, as well as the style, textual and aesthetic, of the correspondence of the Ephorate with every kind of interlocutor, literate or illiterate, foreigner or Greek, constitutes a challenge for the contemporary researcher, historian and archaeologist.
