The Panathenaia in Athens in Roman Imperial times. Aspects of the festival from Caesar Augustus to Theodosius II.
Summary:
The Panathenaia of Athens continued to be the most important Athenian festival in Roman Imperial times, too. However, this significance has not attracted sufficiently the scholars’ interest. The aim of the author of this Master thesis is to present a new comprehensive approach to the quinquennial festival and its games in honour of Athena Polias in Roman Imperial times. This study utilizes the relevant literary, epigraphic, numismatic and archaeological sources. It has a thematic and not chronological structure, includes six sections and an appendix, accompanied by two catalogues of figures and inscriptions, while for the first time all the known victors and agonothetai of the Panathenaia of Roman Imperial times are all assembled in analytical tables.
Firstly, in section I the Panathenaic procession and the Panathenaic ship are analysed. Subsequently, section II deals with emperor Hadrian’s relationship with the festival and its games. Section III has to do with the games of the Panathenaia. In section IV those elements of the Panathenaia that kept alive the historical memory of the Athenians and referred to the glorious past of Athens are analysed. Section V investigates the impact of the invasion of the Herulians on the Panathenaia and the following history of the festival in the late 3rd and the whole 4th century CE. Section VI concerns the latest surviving testimonies about the Panathenaia, the end of the festival and why it ceased forever. Lastly, in the appendix a reference is made to the aetiological myth of the Panathenaia, the theory about Athena’s birthday on the same day as the Panathenaic procession is commented on, while via examination of testimonies of Roman Imperial times, it will be argued that in fact the birthday of Athena had not anything to do with the Panathenaia of Athens.
