Summary:
Introduction: Nursing accountability is a daily process that is carried out by nurses to exchange information on hospitalized patients. When it is conducted correctly, it promotes the health care of the patients.
Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the factors that are influencing the completeness and standardization of nursing accountability.
Method: This review included research studies published between 1999-2018 from the Medline/, PubMed and Google Scholar databases with the words «nursing handoff», «nursing report», «nursing accountability», «change of shift report», «bedside shift report», «shift report», «shift handoff», «handoff tool».
Results: Overall, 10 research studies were reviewed and evaluated. The majority of these studies demonstrated that the structure and content of nursing accountability contribute to the design of the patient's health care. On the other hand, lack of information, interruptions and noise are some of the factors that affect nursing accountability in a negative way. Also, the use of an electronic tool, as well as the use of the bedside shift report, has been found to facilitate the process of nursing accountability. Finally, nursing classification systems increase the quality of health care and patient satisfaction.
Conclusion: According to the studies, there are some factors that influence the process of nursing accountability, the influence of which is important to consider. It is vital to conduct further studies to produce reliable and valid conclusions regarding nursing accountability.
