Original Title:
Η αναπαράσταση του φύλου και της οικογένειας στο έργο του Γιάννη Οικονομίδη
Translated title:
The depiction of gender and family in the work of Yannis Econimides
Summary:
This master’s dissertation analyses four films by the Greek director Yannis Economides (Matchbox, Soul Kicking, Knifer, Stratos). Hallmarks of the director are verbal and physical violence, the use of language as a weapon -combined with vulgarities-, and the tension and roughness of the characters. Auteur theory is the methodological tool the analysis is based on. The main characteristics of this method are a repetition of the same subject matter and the aesthetics of the creator, which are commonly found in Economides’ movies, who has managed to create a personal form of writing, and has also a unique diction and identity in his films, which are easily recognisable. However, Economides’ films have a number of common elements with the movies included in the so-called Greek Weird Wave. In the scope of the present work, we examine and explore the meaning of the term Greek Weird Wave, as well as the wave’s correlation with the recent economic and sociopolitical crisis in Greece. Finally, it is examined whether Economides’ movies could belong to the Greek Weird Wave. Furthermore, an extensive reference to the depiction of gender and family in both the work of Economides and in the western cinematography is conducted.
