Outsourcing of clinical studies - Critical analysis of the benefits and risks arising from the outsourcing of pharmaceutical research and development activities
Summary:
As it is known, the global economy has experienced radical changes in recent years that have clearly influenced the growth and sustainability of pharmaceutical and biotech companies. In particular, reducing R & D investment combined with the higher costs that are now needed to carry out drug development processes than before have rendered externally outsourcing of R & D services in CROs. (Clinical Research Organizations). Apart from economic factors, there are other reasons that have contributed to the development of this kind of cooperation: the rapidly developing scientific and technological developments have also made it necessary to provide services directly from outside organizations which, due to their specialized character, can cope directly with this new requirements. Because of all the above-mentioned even large- scale pharmaceutical companies, have recognized the benefits of outsourcing Clinical Trials and have embraced this new growth model.
In this dissertation, a critical review of the available literature discusses the benefits and risks of this strategic decision taken by most pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies and analyzes the economic aspects that led to the outsourcing of clinical trials.
To sum up, we can say that through the present study we come to the conclusion that the sooner a pharmaceutical company is able to adapt to the new trend in the outsourcing of R & D processes, it will be more profitable and evolving. Through this new model, it will be able to achieve her competitive advantage over her rivals by exploiting her acquired knowledge and experience from collaborations with clinical trials.
