Promoting independence of a preschool child with ASD through the systematic use of an activity schedule
Summary:
People with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) characterized by deficiencies in self-management skills. People diagnosed with ASD show great difficulty in acquiring independent functioning and have a tendency to over-depend on treatment providers rather than remain on task during structured and free-play activities. Activity schedules are an evidence-based method that increase autonomy and independent functioning. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of behavior – analytic intervention, including procedures such as activity schedules, prompting and social reinforcement contingencies in on-schedule behavior, initiations for interaction and on-task behavior of a 5,5-year-old boy with ASD. The intervention was conducted in a therapeutic setting. A reversal (ABAB) single-case experimental design used to assess the efficacy of the intervention. After the introduction of the intervention, there was a rapid and dramatic increase in on-schedule behavior, the number of initiations for interaction and on-task behavior, while the frequency of prompts provided by the therapist had declined dramatically.
