Pilot exploration of the impact of a Systemic, Naturalistic and Behavior-Analytic parent education program to promote social skills in a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Summary:
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has deficits in the field of communication and social interaction. Parents of children with ASD, are natural mediators of the development of early social interactions, offering parallel naturalistic opportunities of interaction at home (Schertz et al., 2017). Parental involvement is an essential part of therapeutic interventions for children with ASD. Research evidence has been validated the effectiveness of parent training programs, for both parents and children and the interaction between them. It has been demonstrated that parent training, aiming to promote communication and social skills, fostering naturalistic parental style of interaction, positively affects parent-child communication and interaction. The purpose of this research is to experimentally investigate the effectiveness of a systematic, naturalistic, developmental, behavior – analytic parent training program, in improving social skills of a child with ASD, in strengthening parental behavior and parent-child communication. The effectiveness of intervention is evaluated by using multiple baseline across categories. Participants are a 4-year-old child, with an ASD diagnosis and two of their parents. The categories of target variables are: a) child-related, b) parent-related, and c) parent-child interaction. The parent training model combines the theoretical principles of Applied Behavior Analysis and General Systems Theory, in conjunction with the Developmental Approach, implementing naturalistic teaching strategies. The implementation of the parent training model had considerable improvements in all variables for which training was provided with improvements in some variables for which treatment was not provided, also treatment effects generalized across home and maintained through time. Therefore, it can be considered that training parents of children with ASD, to implement teaching strategies, based on a complex approach model, demonstrates multiple benefits pertaining to children’ s with ASD, progress and the family’s wellbeing.
