The role of principal for an effective kindergarten
Summary:
The present thesis tries to determine the potential role of the principal of a Greek kindergarten in the school effectiveness of the unit she serves and leads through qualitative research, with female principles of 10 Greek kindergartens from the Attica region - both from public and private institutions - serving as a focus group. The interview protocol of semi-structured personal interviews was used as a research tool and conclusions were drawn through descriptive thematic analysis of categorized questionnaires.
Through the answers given by the female principals, it becomes clear that an “effective kindergarten” seems to be the one in which targets set through the syllabus and the annual educational plan are accomplished, always having the multilateral development of the children - through establishing attitudes, values and good habits for their years at school and onwards - as a top priority. A school with proper infrastructure where a common vision of a collaborative, scientific and versatile environment is shared throughout the entire faculty.
The role of the school principal in accomplishing the aforementioned goals is crucial, even though she is not solely responsible for the school’s effectiveness. Her dual role as both a teacher and an administrative officer brings her closer to the Board but weakens her administrative status. Due to her demanding role, she needs to have an abundance of talents and skills in order to be able to face a multidisciplinary challenge like the one of school effectiveness.
At the same time, school principals value the role of the school board as one of the most important and essential factors of success. Hence they are heavily invested in communicating with the board in an effort to create a positive school climate through which the proper function of the kindergarten can be accomplished - since a positive school climate appears to be the dominant force behind the accomplishment of every vision and target set by the School Board.
