Mentoring in the Greek Educational System: Investigation of opinions of novice elementary school teachers in Attiki
Summary:
The main topic negotiated by this paper is the institution of the mentor of the newly appointed teachers, who was introduced to the Greek educational system in 2010 by Law 3848, but still remains inactive. This research has examined the views of new primary school teachers on the necessity of such an institution, the qualifications that a mentor should have and the contribution of the school administration to the proper functioning of the institution. Through a bibliographic review of Greek and foreign literature, the function of the institution as a responsibility of the principal, the inadequate preparation of the novice teachers to meet the needs of their work and therefore the necessity of support when working for the first year, a presentation of the mentor's responsibilities, the characteristics of the effective mentor and the necessary conditions for the smooth operation of the mentoring. Next, Law 3848/2010 and the investigations made in Greece on this law are presented. Then the qualitative research was carried out with interviews with thirteen young teachers and two principals. This research has shown that novice teachers need guidance and support from a mentor at teaching, pedagogical and psychological level, in issues of relationship management with students and parents and their professional development. From an ideal mentor they demand mental virtues, professional experience and special training on mentoring, and the school principal to guide mentors, supervise their work, and create appropriate conditions for mentorship to work.
