Translated title:
A retrospect of the Natural History collections of the University of Athens. The foundation of the Physiography Museum and the division of its collections (1837-1917)
Summary:
The main theme of this study is to present the foundation of the Physiography Museum of the University of Athens. The aim is the description of incidents related to its operation as a single museum, which included three collections, botanical, zoological and geological, until their division and the erection of four separate museums: Zoological Museum, Geology and Paleontology Museum, Mineralogy and Petrology Museum, Botanical Museum. The reason lies in financial factors, the division of the Physiography course into separate scientific fields and personal conflicts and interests. In addition, emphasis is given to the significant role of the university museums during the 19th and 20th century, not only for the academic community, but also for the entire society.
