Passions and virtues according to the teaching of Saint Nilus the Ascetic (of Ankara)
Summary:
With man’s estrangement from God, the passions, the disease and body’s death entered into human life. As Saint Nilus analyzes on his work, Devil plays an important role in generating passions into humans, mainly through their imagination, thoughts and senses. Despite the classification of passions, these are not independent each other but they are closely connected between them. Thus, one passion usually generates another one. The cure of passions takes place mainly by following the Holy Sacraments of the Church, along with faith, hope, prey, apathy as well as willingness for cure. For Saint Nilus, virtue can be divided into genuine virtue and spurious virtue. The genuine virtue is the one that takes place only through God, otherwise it is spurious. Virtue can be taught only by experienced teachers, mainly with their life’s example and less with their words. When man manages to eliminate or even reduce its passions and lives a sacramental life with virtue, then he is brightened and can enjoy the eternal life in community with God.
