Challenging the concepts of body, gender and sexuality in teenagers' literature. The example of Only Ever Yours.
Summary:
The main aim of this study is to examine how the concepts of body, gender and sexuality are presented in the novel Only Ever Yours by Louise O’Neil. This book was chosen as an example of contemporary young adult literature. Firstly, the concept of ideology and its presence generally in art and more specifically in literature is examined. Furthermore, it is attempted to define the literal terms “Dystopia” and “Bildungsroman”, two literal terms strongly connected to the under-examination book. Then the concepts of body, sex/gender and sexuality are analyzed, through the presentation of the feminist movement’s steps and of the feminist literal theory.
In the second part of this essay, the emphasis is given on examining the novel Only Ever Yours by Louise O’Neil, including the author's biography and the summary of the book plot. The reasons why this book was chosen are presented and an association between Only Ever Yours and the literal genres of dystopia and Bildungsroman is attempted, based on the theory presented in the first part of the study. Moreover, the way the notions of body, gender, and sexuality are presented in Only Ever Yours is examined, under the light of feminist theory presented in the theoretical part of the study. In conclusion, the dystopian society of the book is associated with the modern one, and an attempt to prove dystopia to be a useful tool to emerge social issues is made.
