School climate as a protective factor for the school adjustment of adolescent students
Summary:
The objective of the present study was the examination of school climate as a regulatory factor in the relationship between adversity and school adjustment, as well as the role of adverse living conditions and the school climate in the students’ adjustment. The sample consisted of 119 adolescent students from all three grades of a high school in Attica. Their school adjustment was assessed based on their school performance (last year’s overall grading), number of absences, number of psychological symptoms using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (Goodman, Meltzer & Bailey, 1998) and their school political participation through a self-made questionnaire. The level of adversity experienced by the students was assessed using The Life Events Questionnaire (Fthenakis & Minsel, 2002), the Economic Hardship Questionnaire (Lempers, Clark-Lempers &Simons, 1989) and sociodemographic data that are considered risk indicators. Finally, the school climate was assessed using the Classroom Environment Scale for Secondary School by Matsagouras and Voulgaris (2012). The results showed that school climate can work as a regulatory factor in the relationship between life events and absences. Moreover, important findings were discovered regarding the correlation of adverse living conditions and school climate with school adjustment. The limitations of research are also addressed as well as proposals for future studies.
