The social and economic approach of TB patients
Summary:
Background:Tuberculosis is an important issue of both clinical and public health interest. The gradual increase in both the incidence and resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to antiviral drugs has been strongly observed and has been one of the leading causes of death, as well as hospitalization of patients in ICUs over long periods. There has also been an increase in the number of cases of tuberculosis in patients belonging to vulnerable social groups.
Aim: Investigating the impact of patients' social and economic profile and the association of social factors with disease onset and course.
Materials and Methods: The research tool was a specially designed questionnaire for patients visiting the Sotiria Thoracic Diseases Hospital of Athens . The total sample of patients interviewed was 150 individuals. Data were also obtained from patients' medical records. The questionnaire asked information on the profile of these patients and on disease management (access to health services, medication, etc.).
Results:The total sample consists of 150 patients. The majority of patients (64.4%) were males, the majority resided in Athens (72.4%) and the prevailing age group was 31-40 years (24.2%). 15.2% of the patients were in the group and 107 were immigrants. Regarding the length of stay in Greece, the highest rates were found among people who resided in our country from 2 to 8 years.
Conclusions: The correlation of the role of vulnerable populations with the evolution of the disease and the importance of patients' social characteristics in the course of the disease. The inability to administer the treatment is related to the socio-economic characteristics of the patients.
