The role of mobilization and manipulation techniques in the treatment of cervical pain
Summary:
Introduction\ Background
Manipulation and mobilization techniques (chiropractic) are the most common approaches of physiotherapists for the treatment of cervical pain. They are applied either alone or in combination with other methods to care for people with various types of cervical pain. But there are uncertainties about their effectiveness and safety concerns regarding their use.
Purpose
The purpose of the present thesis is to evaluate the therapeutic techniques of manipulation and mobilization for their effectiveness in relieving pain, disability, satisfaction and quality of life in adults with cervical pain.
Methods
The search strategy for locating relevant research has included searching the PubMed, eGoogle Scholar and clinical trial databases to
date(2019).
(https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/, https://www.clinicaltrials.gov, http://scholar.google.com). The search terms "Mobilization, Manipulation, Osteopathy, Chiropractic, Cervical Therapy, Manual Therapy, RTCs" were used. Aditional related research has been identified by directly searching for available online journals using various keywords that describe the subject under investigation. Restrictions such as articles in English and Greek applied to search results. The studies were considered relevant if they contained data and findings specific to neck pain and / or disorders associated with it.
Results
Initially, 123 articles were identified from which titles and abstracts were selected. Of these, 46 articles were reviewed in full and 10 of them were selected for review. Moderate to strong evidence in favor of the manipulation and mobilization application was identified.
Technical safety data are also reported.
Conclusion
The most recent studies included in the review present results in favor of manipulation and mobilization for the treatment of cervical pain and provide suggestions for future studies. The studies agree on the application of manipulation and mobilization techniques to relieve cervical pain and disability, and on the need to standardize treatment characteristics, such as technique application, frequency of sessions, patient selection, and methodological quality for the effects of treatment. Further investigation of the techniques used and combinations of techniques to standardize treatments is required.
