Capriccio: an artistic phenomenon in visual arts 16th-18th century
Summary:
The term capriccio, origininated in latin, first appears in the late 13th century in the literature of Tuscany meaning sexual desire, carnal lust, horror, disgust, senses which continue to exist until mid 16th century, whilst capriccio is used by Commedia dell’ Arte as a byword for improvisation and burlesque. At that time Giorgio Vasari uses for the first time in his "Vite" the term capriccio to denote subjective elements and unique artistic temperament both of which ranging from artistic invention to rejectable eccentricity, that disdains the art of Disegno, and manifest themselves as exceptional properties in certain works of art.
The thesis seeks to investigate the multiple meanings of the term capriccio from the 16th to the 18th century, its course as a byword for fantasy and outstanding artistic concept to its use as marginal decoration by studying the main art theory sources along with the most exemplary cases in the domain of the visual arts in Europe, especially in Italy during the above-mentioned period of time.
