Infant linguistic skills in the light of emergent literacy
Summary:
Conquering literacy is an indispensable tool for today’s citizens to be able to use their spoken and verbal communication system. The view that children begin to conquer the basic structures of literacy after entering formal education is now obsolete. It is now widely accepted that children begin to build up their knowledge of literacy from the early stages of their lives and during pre-school education. So every experience that the child experiences in the context of social contact with his surroundings is a potential experience of literacy.
The aim of this paper is children's abilities investigation at the end of pre-school education and their crucial role in shaping both the curriculum and the design of the appropriate teaching context.
On a first theoretical level, we present the characteristics of «emergent literacy» and highlights the connection between family and preschool environment. Then a survey of a group of 60 infants in public kindergartens is conducted in order to study their phonological abilities at the beginning of the school year. Three tests were used, each consisting of two spelling and voice tasks, and the data were statistically processed using SPSS software. As observed, the results validate and reinforce existing knowledge about reading function and its association with epileptic and post-linguistic skills, have a significant impact on the development of reading and writing skills and are associated with the acquisition of the alphabetical principle.
