Emotional and Behavioral Problems in Children and Adolescents Attending a Primary Health Care Unit
Summary:
Introduction: The occurrence of mental disorders in Primary Health Care is extremely common and recognition of mental disorder is a first level of reference.
Purpose: The present research aims to study emotional-behavioral problems in children and adolescents throughout their daily lives, their school performance and their social relations. The study concerns children / adolescents aged 1.5-18 who visit a pediatric clinic in a primary health care unit.
Method: The present cross-sectional, non-intrusive survey with a measurement at a specific moment in time and ease sampling took place for the period 10/2018-12/2018, at the "Health Center of N.Ionia", at the "Mother, Child and Adolescent Protection Station ". A total of 220 people participated. Four categories of participants were formed. The first involved 69 parents of children 1.5-5 years, the second 75 parents of children 6-18 years, the third 26 adolescents 11-18 years, and the fourth 25 pairs of parents and adolescents whose responses were correlated.
Results: 71.3% of parents did not use mental health services. 41.7% of adolescents are concerned about their exams while 26.6% of their parents are concerned about their children's health. 4.8% of the children were in the clinical spectrum of anxiety problems according to their parents, while regarding their own responses, 9.8% belonged to the clinical spectrum of physical problems. Ιn the cases of examining the agreement between adolescent self-reports and parental self-reports, their responses varied on emotional and behavioral problems. Adolescents reported more problems in both dimensions than their parents (p = 0.014 and p = 0.003). Parents with a history of mental illness evaluated their children as having more physical problems (p = 0.011).
Conclusions: The present study showed that parents of children aged 1.5-5 years rated them with more problems related to their developmental stages (mobility, speech). Parents of children 6-18 years old rated their children with more problems of hyperactivity and anxiety. The adolescents reported mainly physical problems. In the correlation between parents and their adolescent children, their responses varied to the highest levels of emotional and behavioral problems reported by adolescents. The financial situation of parents does not seem to have a significant impact on the way their children are evaluated.
Primary Health Care is the first recipient of incoming people's health problems and can make a significant contribution to the early detection of affective and behavioral disorders in children and adolescents. Prevention of mental illness is mandatory in the child / adolescent population.
