Trademarks and greek (agricultural) businesses
Summary:
The purpose of this graduate thesis is to highlight the importance and usefulness of trademarks in agricultural businesses. The relation between Greek (mainly agricultural) exporting companies and trademarks is examined; this relation is not particularly close, as the descriptive statistics show, according to a random sample of the 1243 firms that are being studied; this is because only 42% of the companies are actively associated with trademarks, mostly in Greece. In addition, appropriate regression models are analyzed, in order to identify the relationship between the number of trademarks registered by Greek companies abroad and factors such as the per capita income of the foreign country, its population, its distance from Greece and the amount of Greece's exports to that country. This analysis is performed with the use of three different methods for each model, in order to distinguish which of the three methods (ols, fixed & random effects) is more appropriate for explaining these results. It should be noted that the foreign countries where Greek trademarks are registered are those twenty five countries where Greece exports the most. This is where the study focuses for the years 1997-2016. This process of regression analysis is carried out for three different cases, the aggregate data, the years 2003-2007 and 2008-2012 (before and after the economic crisis) and the distinction between "poor" and "rich" countries, according to their per capita income. For each of the three cases, a number of useful conclusions is drawn; however, according to the results of the estimators of the variables, a common finding for all three is that a determining positive factor in the registration of Greek businesses trademarks in a foreign country is the total amount of Greece's exports to that country.
