Summary:
The present thesis concerns the installation of renewable energy units within areas of increased protection. Its object is to investigate the protection regime, which governs forests, forest and reforestation areas and the Natura 2000 areas, as well as the regime, governing the land planning and the environmental licensing of renewable energy projects. The aim is to find the connection, namely the intersection points and the conflict points between the environmental protection of areas of increased ecological importance and the promotion of renewable energy projects. In the beginning, the protection regime, governing these particular areas and the possibility of installing renewable energy projects within these areas are investigated. The study is complemented by the examination of the regime, which governs the land planning in Greece and the regime that governs the environmental licensing of projects and activities, with emphasis on renewable energy projects. The investigation concludes on the interconnection of environmental protection and the promotion of renewable energy sources and, finally, specific suggestions are made.
