The meaning of grammar in Jazz and its application to the musical form "Rhythm Changes"
Summary:
The present thesis deals with "grammar" in the Jazz musical idiom, and more specifically in the musical form "Rhythm Changes", regarding the production of harmonic sequences. Initially, grammar is presented from a linguistic point of view, and then we analyze its application to the above musical form, both theoretically and technologically. The main goal is to study and design an application that will produce chord progressions, based on a grammar that will set the rules for possible chord substitutions, while maintaining the harmonic structure and philosophy of the form.
The analysis of this grammar begins with the temporal delimitation of the musical form, and then sets out the rules by which a harmonic tree is created, which allows possible chord substitutions that are generally accepted by Jazz theory. Indicative audio samples of alternative chord progressions are produced, based on the above, with a structural and aesthetic commentary on the result. Finally, we describe a potential technological application, by designing a plugin for use in play along applications that are used during the various stages of jazz education.
The starting point and inspiration for the present work was Mark Steedman's particularly important study “A Generative Grammar for Jazz Chord Sequences” (M.Steedman, 1984), which deals with the production of chord progressions in the simple Blues musical form.
