Comparison of self-awareness, depression and anxiety in patients undergoing dialysis and in patients that have undergone renal transplantation.
Summary:
The purpose of this study was to examine the differences that possibly exist in depressive and anxiety symptoms of patients undergoing dialysis and in patients that have undergone renal transplantation. Also, the variables that may be associated with the differentiations within the teams of patients were examined as well. The study was conducted in the “Laiko” and “Attiko” Public Hospitals as well as in a Private Dialysis Unit and it included 32 dialysis patients and 30 transplanted patients. Data were collected with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Messer’s and Harter’s Questionnaire of Self-awareness for adults.
In the transplanted patients sample, age was negatively associated with the Self-awareness subscale care for others (r =-0,412, p=0,023). Sex seemed to be marginally associated in a statistically significant level (p=0,050) at the work subscale with women achieving higher score. The duration of transplantation in months seemed to be positively associated with depression (r =0,433, p=0,017). There seemed to be a significant negative association in most fields between self-awareness and the score in the HADS (Depression) subscale. The HADS (Anxiety) subscale is negatively associated only with the sense of humor subscale.
In the patients undergoing dialysis sample, there seemed to be a positive association between the years of education, social relationships (r=0,422, p=0,016), intelligence (r=0,390, p=0,028) and sense of humor (r=0,431, p=0,014) subscales. Sex seemed to be associated in a statistically important level with the physical appearance (p=0,047), intelligence (p=0,047) and social relationships subscales, with women achieving lower score than men. In most fields, except the work subscale, there seemed to be an important negative association between self-awareness and the score in the HADS(Depression) and HADS(Anxiety) subscales.
When comparing the two samples concerning self-awareness and the HADS(Depression) and HADS(Anxiety) subscales, a statistically important difference was obvious within the two samples only in the HADS(Depression) subscale (p=0,019).
In conclusion, depression seemed to differentiate between the two patient samples, showing the possible improvement in the physical and psychosocial situation of patients that have undergone a renal transplantation confirming its prevalence as treatment of choice.
