Translation History and Practices of Jule Verne's L' Archipel en feu (19th -21st c.)
Summary:
The present study aimed at examining a corpus of translations from French into Greek of the 1884 Jules Verne novel L’Archipel en feu, which was translated and published for the first time in a Greek political newspaper in 1884. This particular novel has been translated for readers of various ages over the years. For this reason, we opted for a diachronic approach by selecting seven renderings from 1884 to 2005. In particular, six full length renderings and the 1931 adaptation for children by Nikos Kazantzakis were examined, in order to analyze the practices used when translating texts. Moreover, this master’s thesis addresses how various causes affect the translation outcome. Based on Pym’s and Toury’s models, we approached the retranslation phenomenon by comparing each target text with the source-text. The findings of this study reflect the changes in Greek cultural life over the years.
