The Roots and the Causes for the Growth of Populism in Greece during the Financial Crisis
Summary:
The populist context that had largely emerged during the postwar period, aided by the economic crisis that our country experienced in conjunction with European and global social and political developments, led to the rise of populism in Greece during the period of economic crisis. In the present work, we have attempted to go a step further by also believing that populism has not only regained strength but has largely become a central political narrative in the country's political affairs.
In order to proceed to the scientific verification of our theory, we chose bibliographic research, mainly in the history and stages of populism in our country. In addition, to examine the relationship between the rhetoric of the parties of our time and the populist phenomenon, we proceeded to a discourse analysis based on the theoretical framework of populism presented in the first chapter.
The above steps have led us to conclude that populism has indeed succeeded largely in leading the country's political life during the period of economic crisis by defining political debate in the public sphere and having a profound effect on Greek citizens' electoral behavior.
