Summary:
The present thesis examines the subject of scenography in the museum environment, and in particular, investigates the contribution of scenography to the visitors' learning and engaging through scenography practices. The case study, presented in the second part of the thesis, focuses on public research through focus groups conducted for the periodical exhibition Arabian Roads at Benaki Museum. In more detail, the first chapter of the thesis deals with scenography as a practice and then, its use in the museum environment, as well as its parameters and tools. In addition, there are two theories regarding the visitor's museum experience that will be utilized in forming the evaluation. The second chapter elaborates on the methods of conducting visitor studies, specially on the focus group evaluation tool. In the third chapter, the case study of the Benaki Museum's Arabian Roads exhibition is analyzed, and the methodology of this research is presented shortly afterwards. Finally, the structure of the focus groups are presented and set up to follow the research conclusions shortly afterwards. The fourth chapter consists of the appendixes listing all the data collected during the above procedure.
The methodology to be followed in this thesis includes the formulation and elaboration of two research hypotheses on which the bibliographic review and evaluation formulation is based. The first research hypothesis relates to whether stage setting can contribute to the visitor's museum experience. Examining the above hypothesis reveals the need to investigate an additional one, that investigates whether the theoretical models of museum experience evaluation can be used to create a new evaluation of the contribution of scenographic design in museum experience. The purpose of the research is to examine the representation of cognitive and emotional values, as well as the values of the collection and the objects, in direct relation to the way they are presented and the scenographic performance. The results of the research are aiming at a better understanding of the experience and appreciation of the presentation's way by the visitors, in order to outline the public's preferences as much as possible and then make the best out of the scenographic design in future exhibitions.
