Cultural-Aesthetic Literacy: Visual Arts in Adult Education at the Second Chance Schools
Summary:
This dissertation examines the experiences and expectations of the adult learners at the Second Chance Schools (SCS) following the courses in Arts Education and of Cultural-Aesthetic Literacy in particular, based on the personal involvement of the researcher as an instructor of these courses. The thesis is based in the research hypothesis that the ideas and the views of the learners of SCS, regarding the ways to foster their creativity, can be included to enrich the curriculum of the Cultural-Aesthetic Literacy. This question becomes pertinent to the operation of the SCS, as the current educational framework of these courses is not supported by a curriculum and clear educational guidelines and the role of the instructor is often relying on intuition and personal rapport with the course participants.
On the basis of what was recorded by the learners during the research implementation, we attempt to identify activities that are related to current approaches in Adult Education, the philosophy behind SCS, the ideas of Aesthetic Education and the post-modern theories about art and education.
The research method consisted of a questionnaire, which was distributed to 360 learners in 6 different SCS of the Attiki metropolitan area, followed by individual and group structured interviews in a selected sample of 18 participant learners from the SCS of Peristeri.
Next, a set of descriptive statistics was applied to the questionnaires and a methodology of qualitative analysis on the interviews.
According to the analysis of the research techniques, the initial research case is confirmed and the experiences and expectations of the adult learners indeed form ideas and suggestions that can be integrated in the development of a modern curriculum regarding the application of Aesthetic Literacy in SCS.
