Summary:
This qualitative research explores the use of historical literary context as an interpretive tool in the teaching of Literature. In particular, it examines the potential influence of the historical literary context on the participation and quality of students' responses when it is provided in the interpretative process rather than on the principle of teaching. To achieve this goal, a design-based research was conducted, in which four teaching interventions were performed, whilst participatory observation and focus group interviewing were used as data collection tools. The data analysis by thematic analysis revealed that the historical literary context is useful as an interpretive tool when the text being taught is sufficiently demanding so that the students are in need of support during the interpretation process. At the same time, they appeared to be influenced by their understanding and ability to self-act, while some students were able to perceive the historical literary context as an interpretive tool. In terms of the quality of their responses, the students were able to document their interpretative assumptions, make original interpretations, and also formulate their own titles for the texts, which sometimes contained historical data. In conclusion, the historical literary context must be integrated into the teaching of Literature under certain conditions, while the differentiation of teaching, the role of the context within it, and the role of the teacher conducting the lesson are crucial.
