Exploiting experiential learning in the context of antiracist education
Summary:
In a time of global instability and uncertainty, social cohesion and social unity are of paramount importance to our society. Against this background, it is also the capital to tackle racism that pervades daily social unity. This phenomenon, even in the classroom, creates feelings of discomfort, inferiority and even aggression in its victims and at times leads to school leakage. For this reason, this phenomenon is extensively analyzed and ways of dealing with it through education are proposed.
As racism can be considered the unequal and unfair treatment of certain people or certain groups of people on the basis of one or more of their characteristics. People's perceptions for other people because of their characteristics are called prejudices. Antiracist education is about every student, supports social justice and equality, and aims to prevent and address all forms of racism. An ideal way to implement antiracist teaching is to make use of experiential learning, which aims to actively engage students in the learning process. Through experiential learning and teaching, students come closer, learn to cooperate, help and respect each other.
The present study, therefore, deals with the exploitation of experience in the fight against racism. In particular, it aims to show exactly how experiential teaching can be utilized in the context of antiracist education and to highlight teachers' views on this topic. The qualitative research was conducted in the months of May and June of the calendar year 2018 and participants were active teachers from the following public primary schools - Vrilissia Primary School, Galatsi 5th Primary School and Athens 48th Primary School.
