Exploring the Relationship between Missed Nursing Care and Compassion Fatigue in the Nursing Staff of an Oncology Hospital
Summary:
Background: Missed care, the required care that is not provided, is a new indicator of the quality of nursing care. It is affected by the work environment and teamwork in the department, as well as by the personal characteristics of nurses. It is also linked to the nurses' satisfaction with their profession.
Aim: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between missed nursing care and compassion fatigue in the staff of one Athens’ Oncology Hospital.
Methodology: A convenience sample was used. All nursing staff working in the clinics and outpatient clinics of the hospital was invited to participate in the study. The tools used were MISSCARE Survey Greek Version and Professional Quality of Life-5th Edition (2009). 150 questionnaires were distributed and 116 (77.33%) were completed. The questionnaires were collected in July and August 2018.
Results: The majority of participants were women (94.8%), aged 35-44 years (37.9%). They are graduates of higher education (54.3%). They work either in pathology or in a surgical clinic. Time of work is full time. Missed care averages 1.7 ± 0.60 (1-4.73). In general, patient care is rarely omitted. The most frequently omitted activity is the change in patient position (N = 48, 41.4%), which is sometimes omitted. Both material and human resources, as well as communication and teamwork, are of moderate importance for the lack of care. Participants had moderate compassion fatigue, moderate occupational fatigue (24.6 ± 5.3) and moderate secondary traumatic stress (25.0 ± 6.6). The level of education is related to the identification of the causes of a lack of care. Recognition of the causes of missed nursing care is also related to the previous work experience, the time spent in the clinic, and job satisfaction. Recognition of missed nursing care is related to the overtime and the job satisfaction.
Conclusion: In oncology, there are lower rates of missed care than in other clinical environment. There is also less compassion fatigue at work.
